Two goals from Ilhan Fandi on his Lion City Sailors debut guided the reigning Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions to glory in the season-opening Community Shield against familiar foes Tampines Rovers at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday, 6 September.

The Sailors controlled large parts of the contest en route to a 2-0 victory to get their 2026/27 campaign off to the perfect start, while securing the third Community Shield triumph in the club’s history, following their successes in 2022 and 2024.

“I’m very happy with how we executed the game plan tonight, and I hope our fans enjoyed our first match of the season as much as we did,” said Interim Head Coach Varo Moreno after the win.

As many as seven new signings started for the Sailors, and one of them, Matthias Phaëton, provided the first spark of the game in front of 3,865 spectators. The Guadeloupe international accelerated past Irfan Najeeb down the left in the seventh minute to force the first corner of the evening, which also saw the on-pitch debut of the adidas TIRO Pro 26.

The Sailors faithful did not have to wait much longer for the breakthrough, with Ilhan starting and finishing a slick team move in the 17th minute.

The in-form Singapore international found Bart Ramselaar while under pressure, with the Dutchman then picking out Matthias. The ball was eventually worked to the onrushing Diogo Costa, whose inviting delivery into the box was headed home by Ilhan.

Bart continued to cause problems in midfield and, just a couple of minutes later, found Matthias again, but the winger’s effort was kept out by Tampines goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad.

Ilhan then headed wide from a Kyoga Nakamura free-kick before doubling the Sailors’ advantage in the 26th minute. Bart was once again involved as he released Farhan Zulkifli, who timed his run perfectly before teeing up his fellow debutant to make it 2-0.

“I’m very happy with my debut, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement,” said Man of the Match Ilhan. “The past couple of weeks haven’t been ideal for the club. However, we are professional footballers and remain fully committed to the task.”

The two-goal deficit stirred the Stags into action as they sought a response before the half-time interval.

And their first notable opportunity came in the 33rd minute when new Sailors goalkeeper Victor Aznar misjudged Yuki Kobayashi’s ball forward, but Hide Higashikawa could only strike the outside of the post from a tight angle.

Seiga Sumi then saw a powerful long-range effort cannon off the underside of the crossbar and bounce to safety in the 45th minute, before Higashikawa’s goal-bound header off Shah Shahiran’s cross was well held by Victor in first-half stoppage time.

Higashikawa, last season’s SPL Player of the Year, had another presentable opportunity immediately after the restart but dragged his effort wide in the 46th minute.

From then on, the Sailors looked increasingly comfortable, with new Brazilian centre-back Hugo Gomes providing a commanding presence at the back and former French Ligue 2 man Giovanni Haag adding composure and guile in midfield.

Shortly after the hour mark, Varo made a triple substitution, introducing former Tampines man Glenn Kweh and new Croatian frontman Antonio Mance alongside club centurion Song Uiyoung.

Antonio was involved in the Sailors’ next opportunity in the 71st minute, sliding a through ball into the path of Ryhan Stewart, whose effort sailed over the crossbar.

Varo later introduced two more new faces, with former Liverpool youngster Bobby Adekanye and Jorge Karseladze getting their first taste of competitive club football in Singapore.

The game sprang back into life in second-half stoppage time. Shah first tested Victor with a long-range effort before Hami Syahin embarked on a superb solo run at the other end and found Antonio, whose shot on the turn fizzed narrowly past the post.

“There’s going to be a lot of competition for places, and it will be difficult to choose who plays because this group is simply outstanding,” said Varo.

The victory also saw the Sailors avenge their defeat by the Stags in last season’s Community Shield, as the club’s new-look squad delivered an early statement of intent.

Tampines and the newly rebranded FC Jurong are again expected to be among the Sailors’ sternest challengers for the SPL title in 2026/27, but the Sailors also have ambitions that extend far beyond the domestic stage.

“It was nice to get revenge after last year’s defeat,” said Ilhan. “Given how ambitious this club is, we know how far we want to go in the other competitions as well.

“It’s a good start for us, and hopefully we can build on this momentum and have an amazing season together.”

With the season’s first piece of silverware secured, the Sailors will now march onto the new SPL campaign as they take on Hougang United on Saturday, 12 September.

A physically and mentally demanding season awaits, with the Sailors setting their sights not only on retaining the SPL title and Singapore Cup, but also on further breakthroughs in the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup and AFC Champions League Two.

“It’s going to be a tough and long season. We have to compete in four different competitions,” said Varo. “Our national team players didn’t have much rest during the summer, and we also have an international window coming up in which several of our players will be involved.

“After that, we have nine matches in four weeks across October and November. But we have a bigger and better squad than last season, and with an amazing backroom staff, we will be able to manage the workload better this time.”
