Queens of Singapore football stepping up to challenge region’s best

Fresh off a memorable unbeaten and victorious Deloitte Women’s Premier League (WPL) campaign, the Lion City Sailors Women’s team are raring to take the next step as they face some of the region’s best at SingaCup’s inaugural Women’s Football Championship (WFC) 2022 between 17 to 21 October 2022.

Starting off with a match-up against Philippines’ Kaya FC-Iloilo on Monday, 17 Oct (German European School, kickoff 7.30pm), Yeong Sheau Shyan’s charges will then play Indonesia’s Persib Bandung Putri two days later (Bedok Stadium, kickoff 7.30pm) before ending the tournament against Thailand’s Phranakorn FC on Friday, 21 Oct (German European School, kickoff 7.30pm).

The three teams are set to give the Sailors a huge test of their abilities.

Kaya are led by highly-decorated former Philippines Women’s national team head coach Let Dimzon, while Persib are the reigning champions of Liga 1 Putri, the top tier of women’s football in Indonesia, a title they won in 2019. Phranakorn – a new club that will join the Thai Women’s League next season – are no pushovers either, they have several former senior and youth Thai internationals in their ranks.

Sailors Women Head Coach Sheau Shyan is looking forward to the opportunity to see where they stand against some of Southeast Asia’s best.

“These teams come from countries where the level is much higher than what we have here, so the girls definitely have to step up their game and perform much better than how they did in the WPL,” emphasised the 44-year-old, who is also the head coach of the national Under-16 girls team and assistant coach to the Under-19 girls.

“I foresee the strongest challenge to come from Phranakorn FC, but the other two teams are equally as good as well. It’ll be a good test to see how well we work together as a team to break down these quality sides.

“We’re a bit short of numbers due to some injured players, so there’ll be some new faces joining the team for this and it’ll be interesting to see how they complement the rest of the team.”

Sailors’ path to redemption starts here

Last Friday’s (7 October) 4-2 defeat to Albirex Niigata (S) sealed the destination of the 2022 Singapore Premier League (SPL) title and officially ended the Lion City Sailors’ term as defending champions of the league.

Regardless of what happens in the final two matches of the season, the Sailors will finish second in the eight-team table. On paper, there appears little left to play for.

But the bitter taste of a failed title defence has only served to give Luka Lalić’s men a stronger resolve to put things right – starting from Friday’s (14 October) away clash against Tanjong Pagar United.

This game against the Jaguars and the season-closing home match against Young Lions a week later on 21 October will serve as preparation for a maiden Singapore Cup campaign – where the Sailors will look to end the 2022 season on a positive note.

“It’s sad not to be able to retain the title because we’ve worked all year in trying to reach this objective and this feeling really hurts. But there’s no time to dwell on this disappointment and we have to look to the future,” said midfield star Diego Lopes.

“We are going to focus on these next two games, get our spirits up for the Singapore Cup and we’re going to make sure we give a strong response in the competition.

“We owe this to the fans and we have to make up for not winning the league.”

Sailors interim Head Coach Luka shared Diego’s sentiments, affirming that he will put out a strong lineup against Hasrin Jailani’s side while moving to switch things up a bit.

“I don’t look at this as the last two league games; I’m looking at this as a two-and-a-half week preparation for the Cup. We’re going to use these two matches as an extension of training to change a few things that we need to,” said the 35-year-old.

“For sure, the best team will play as we want to put up good performances and get results. We’re in the same group as Balestier Khalsa and Albirex in the Cup – two teams that we owe some things to. That’s the message all across the team – we now have a path to redemption and we want to take this opportunity to show something for our fans.”

In a fit and recharged Diego, the Sailors have a lethal weapon to call upon and the silky playmaker is ready to lead the charge after marking his return from injury with a strong 90-minute display against Albirex last week.

The 28-year-old Brazilian tends to do well against Tanjong Pagar, scoring three braces against the Jaguars in big-margin wins this year, and he is hoping to continue in the same vein.

“I try to play every game in the same manner to help the team and somehow it works out better against Tanjong Pagar. Missing a couple of games through injury was tough for me, but now I’m back and I want to help the club win the Singapore Cup,” he said.

“We have to work hard as a team and get that winning feeling back, starting from this game against Tanjong Pagar.”

Rooted in belief, and reaching for the stars: Sailors’ wild ride to WPL title

Armed with a talented squad that includes a number of Singapore internationals, promising foreign players and young talents, the Lion City Sailors Women set an ambitious goal for themselves in their maiden Deloitte Women’s Premier League (WPL) campaign – they did not just want to win the league, they wanted to do it in style, with an entertaining brand of attacking football.

And they delivered, in emphatic fashion, passing and moving to the WPL title in their maiden season.

The road to being crowned champions of the first post-pandemic WPL season was paved with various pitfalls: from players leaving the country and the club to pursue work and academic goals, injuries, and challenging conditions at the Yishun Stadium, to inspired performances from stubborn opposition.

But the Sailors women were rooted in their united belief that hard work, a firm commitment to the playing philosophy and sheer doggedness would get them to the finish line in what turned out to be a memorable voyage to the WPL title.

Hitting the ground with a sprint

Head Coach Yeong Sheau Shyan and her charges stayed true to their word, getting their season off to a flyer as they dispatched Albirex Niigata (S) 4-1 on 5 June with Nur Izzati Rosni grabbing a brace, before thrashing Hougang United 6-0 courtesy of a couple of goals each from Lila Tan and Dorcas Chu to make it two wins out of two.

A one-month hiatus due to Singapore’s involvement in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship failed to halt their momentum as they swept aside Still Aerion FC 4-0 on their return to league action through braces from Izzati and Danelle Tan. They then edged Tiong Bahru 2-1 through another Danelle double to keep their 100% record intact after four matches.

There was no doubt that the Sailors laid down a serious marker from the start, firmly establishing themselves as the team to beat in the early days of the season.

First setback before rediscovering the groove

The Sailors Women hit a snag in their fifth WPL outing, failing to break down a compact defensive block set up by Tanjong Pagar United and had to be content with a 0-0 draw.

There was clear frustration from Sheau Shyan and the players after the result, but they channelled that into positive energy, defeating Balestier Khalsa 4-0 in their next fixture – with Danelle netting in her final Sailors outing before returning to the United Kingdom to resume her studies – and got back to winning ways.

Next up was a tricky task against Albirex – bolstered by a few mid-season arrivals including former Japan international Kana Kitahara – but the Sailors delivered one of their most convincing displays in 2022 to smash the White Swans 4-0 with Izzati starring with her first-ever WPL hat-trick.

The league leaders then overcame Balestier 3-0 before tearing Hougang apart 6-0 – with Canadian teenager Madison Telmer netting a treble – as the Sailors registered four straight wins to remain five points clear at the top with a game in hand on closest rivals Tanjong Pagar.

More importantly, they were at that point, just one win away from sealing the title.

Sealing the crown as Invincibles

The title triumph was then confirmed two weeks later on 10 September as Sheau Shyan’s women recovered from a sluggish first-half display to demolish Still Aerion 4-0 – a result that saw raucous celebrations at the final whistle as players celebrated in unison with fans who made the trip up north to Yishun.

The title was sewn up with two games left to play, but the women were not fully done. They had set their sights on finishing the season unbeaten, and the job still required work.

Their five-match winning run would come to an end against a resolute Tiong Bahru side as they were held to a goalless draw and failed to win for just the second time in 2022.

The final match of the season would not come any easier as they came up against a determined Tanjong Pagar side, who were gunning for a win to seal second spot. Yuki Monden drew first blood for the Jaguars as the Sailors’ goal was breached for the first time in eight matches, but the champions rallied and levelled through Lila before netting a dramatic injury-time winner through Fatin Aqillah to end the season on a high note.

As the Sailors lifted the WPL trophy and were presented with the S$25,000 winners’ cheque after the game, there was little doubt that it was a thoroughly deserved triumph.

The Sailors were the only team to beat every other team in the league, they ended the campaign with the best attacking and defensive record, scoring 39 and conceding just three, they finished seven points clear of eventual runners-up Albirex and Izzati picked up the top scorers’ award with 10 goals to top it all off.

Over the course of the season, the players showed their ability to break down stubborn defences and display the brand of progressive football that they set out to achieve from the get-go.

While plans are still being firmed up for the 2023 WPL season, one thing is for certain: the Sailors women will return for the new campaign with the same desire and increased motivation to retain their spot as the Queens of Singapore football.

Dethroned Sailors now set sights on Singapore Cup

The Lion City Sailors’ hopes of defending their 2021 Singapore Premier League (SPL) title went up in smoke on Friday (7 October) night with a 4-2 loss to Albirex Niigata (S) – a result that has instead sealed the White Swans’ fifth league triumph in seven years.

In front of a sold-out crowd of 3,500 fans at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the Sailors managed to cancel out Albirex’s early opener and gave themselves a fighting chance while trailing 3-2, but ultimately fell to a fourth straight defeat.

The loss meant the White Swans have secured an unassailable seven-point lead at the top of the table and are the 2022 SPL champions, although there is a thin silver lining for the Sailors who have a potential route back into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League group stages in 2023 by virtue of finishing as the SPL’s top local team.

Sailors interim Head Coach Luka Lalić lamented the fact that a much-improved performance from the previous three matches failed to yield a positive result.

“We didn’t lose the title in this game; we lost it in the previous three. There was a positive feeling before the game and everyone had the belief that we could win. You can see how much the boys went out there to fight for every ball and be aggressive in their challenges.

“But we lacked that final touch and composure to convert the various chances we had, while Albirex took almost every chance they created – that’s the main difference. Congratulations to Albirex and we’ll try to bounce back in the Singapore Cup,” said the 35-year-old.

Albirex drew first blood on five minutes through Singapore international Ilhan Fandi, who capitalised on a botched clearance to fire home a sweet volley from the edge of the box.

The Sailors swiftly responded to make it 1-1 through South Korean front man Kim Shin-wook, who calmly finished beyond Takahiro Koga for his 21st goal of the season after being picked out by a gorgeous Adam Swandi ball over the top.

The visitors went back ahead in the 37th minute with Ilhan teeing up Tanaka for a close-range header, before Luka’s men spurned a series of excellent chances to restore parity on either side of the break.

Tanaka then grabbed a second to make it 3-1 in the 78th minute after doing just enough in a one-on-one with Hassan Sunny to get the ball over the line, but the Sailors found a lifeline six minutes later.

Substitute Gabriel Quak coolly converted from the spot after Maxime Lestienne was felled in the box by Masaya Idetsu to halve the deficit and the Sailors went agonisingly close to finding an equaliser shortly after – with Maxime firing just over after skipping past a number of challenges.

The Sailors piled the pressure late on and were made to pay the price for pushing numbers forward, with Tanaka taking full advantage by latching onto a long ball and lashing beyond Hassan to complete his hat-trick and seal the crown for the Japanese satellite side.

While there is the obvious disappointment of failing to retain the league title, Luka called for the Sailors to quickly shift their focus to winning the last piece of silverware on offer this season.

“The feeling’s obviously not great, but our season is far from over – we still have the Singapore Cup,” stressed Luka.

“It was nice to see the stadium being so packed – we have all our Sailors Academy’s players and their families here tonight – and the support was fantastic.

“I would like to send big apologies to all our supporters; we know they’ll continue to be behind us for the Cup and we’re going to make sure we put up a strong performance in the tournament for them.”

Hearts on sleeves, hands on deck: Sailors ready for Albirex battle

The Lion City Sailors gear up for Friday (7 October) night’s big Singapore Premier League (SPL) clash against league leaders Albirex Niigata (S) at the Jalan Besar Stadium, fully aware of what needs to be done.

Trailing the White Swans by four points with three games to go, the Sailors need nothing less than a win to keep their title hopes alive and haul themselves back into the race.

On the other hand, a victory will see the Japanese satellite side open an unassailable seven-point lead and seal their fifth league triumph – a scenario that the Sailors are determined to avoid.

Coming into the game on the back of an error-laden 5-3 loss to Balestier Khalsa that stretched a losing run to three games, Luka Lalić’s men acknowledged their recent performances have been below-par and were hard at training this week to work out the kinks.

Calling it a “cup final”, experienced campaigner Hassan Sunny has called for his side to put up a back-to-the-wall performance against Albirex and show that they are ready to battle.

“Obviously it’s not been the best of periods for us, but we retain a strong belief and mentality internally within our squad. This is the time where we ought to show up and prove ourselves.

“Everyone of us has to leave it all out there on the pitch and give our 100 percent commitment to get these important three points,” said the 38-year-old, who won the title in 2014 with the now-defunct Warriors FC and in 2021 with the Sailors.

“In the past three games, I can say that the first half against Balestier was our best performance, but the levels dipped in the second half. For this game against Albirex, we know we have to turn up for the full 90 minutes and perform till the final whistle.

“We’ll still need other teams to do us a favour against Albirex (in the final two matches), but let’s just do our job first to give ourselves a chance of retaining the title.”

Saifullah Akbar sang from the same hymn book as he looks to take on a White Swans outfit that have been unbeaten in their last 11 outings.

“We’re going into this with the mentality of nothing to lose. The pressure is now on Albirex as they are the league leaders. For us, we aren’t going to worry that much about what they’re going to do but instead we’re going to focus on what we can control – which is to deliver the coaches’ game plan and play to our strengths,” said the 23-year-old.

“We’re going in with all guns blazing, we’re going to take risks and play our football. I’ve absolute confidence in this team that we can put up a result when it matters the most.”

With tickets selling out fast for this blockbuster clash, Saifullah is excited by the prospect of playing in front of a packed Jalan Besar and believes that will give them an edge.

“This is the kind of game that every Singapore football fan should be looking forward to. Credit to Albirex – they’ve made the league very interesting. With the crowd we’re expecting, the game should be one that will be played at a high intensity.

“We have that little advantage of playing in front of our fans on a flat surface, so we’re certainly out to deliver a good show for them – we do not want to let them down as they’ve been coming down to support us in every game, rain or shine,” he said.

All set for an exciting Friday night clash that will define the season, Hassan is rallying his teammates to play with hearts on sleeves to get an overdue first league win against Albirex.

“We have to treat this as if it’s the last game of the season, just like against Balestier last season (a 4-1 win that sealed the 2021 title on the final day) – I’ve never seen so much fire, desire and hunger from the players before that night.

“We’ve to do the same in this match and I know we can do this as a team,” said a defiant Hassan.
